Following up on job applications is one of the most underutilized job search strategies. A well-timed, professional follow-up can move your application from the ignored pile to the interview list. Here's how to do it right.
Recruiters are busy. Your application might get lost in the shuffle, delayed by an ATS glitch, or simply not yet reviewed. A polite follow-up:
After submitting an application: Wait 5-7 business days. Earlier than that risks seeming impatient. Later than 10 business days, and the opportunity may have moved on.
After an interview: Send a thank-you note within 24 hours. Then wait for the timeline the interviewer provided. If they said "we'll decide by Friday," don't follow up until the following Monday.
After a networking conversation: Send a thank-you within 24 hours. If they offered to help, follow up after 1-2 weeks with a gentle reminder.
For interview follow-up, see Interview Follow-Up Etiquette: Thank You Notes and More.
Subject line: Reference the role and keep it clear. "Following Up on Marketing Manager Application — Jane Smith"
Body:
Sample: "Dear Mr. Johnson, I hope this note finds you well. I submitted my application for the Senior Analyst position on May 15th and wanted to follow up to express my continued interest. I remain very excited about the opportunity to contribute to your team. Please let me know if you need any additional information from me. Thank you for your time and consideration."
If you've sent one follow-up and heard nothing after another week, it's generally time to move on. Some companies simply don't respond to applicants they've passed on. Continuing to follow up risks coming across as pushy.
However, if the role is a perfect fit and you have a referral, one more check-in 2-3 weeks later is acceptable.
If you can't find an email, a LinkedIn message is acceptable. Keep it professional and brief. Reference the application and your interest.
