Virtual interviews are now the norm for most companies. While the fundamentals of interviewing remain the same, remote interviews come with unique challenges and opportunities. Here's how to master your next video interview.

Technical Preparation

Test everything before the interview:

  • Camera: Position it at eye level. Natural light in front of you, not behind
  • Microphone: Use an external mic or earbuds for better audio quality
  • Internet: Use a wired connection if possible. Close bandwidth-heavy apps
  • Software: Download and test the interview platform (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet)
  • Background: Choose a clean, neutral background or use a professional virtual background

Setting Up Your Environment

  • Lighting: Face a window or use a ring light. Avoid harsh overhead lighting
  • Noise: Close windows, silence notifications, and inform household members
  • Distractions: Remove clutter from your background and desk area
  • Comfort: Have water nearby. Dress professionally from head to toe (you never know when you might need to stand up)

Virtual Body Language

Your body language communicates confidence and engagement:

  • Eye contact: Look at the camera, not your own image on screen
  • Posture: Sit up straight, lean slightly forward to show engagement
  • Gestures: Use hand gestures naturally — they're visible on camera
  • Nodding: Nod to show you're listening, but don't overdo it
  • Pacing: Speak slightly slower than normal — audio lag can make fast speech hard to follow

Common Virtual Interview Mistakes

  • Reading from notes: It's obvious when you're reading. Use brief bullet points only
  • Looking at the screen instead of the camera: It looks like you're looking down
  • Skipping the connection building: Virtual interviews can feel transactional — make an effort to connect personally
  • Not handling tech issues gracefully: If your connection drops, stay calm, reconnect, and apologize briefly

Handling Technical Difficulties

If something goes wrong:

  • Have a backup plan (phone number for a call)
  • Test your setup at least 30 minutes before
  • Know how to share your screen if needed

Virtual Interview Questions

Expect the same types of questions as in-person interviews, but be ready for the remote format. Prepare STAR-method answers for behavioral questions.

For question preparation, see 10 Common Interview Questions and How to Answer Them and Behavioral Interview Guide: Using the STAR Method.

Follow-Up After Virtual Interviews

Send a thank you email within 24 hours, just like an in-person interview. Reference something specific from the conversation.
